Yehuda Shaul
Age: 23
Home: Israel
As a child growing up in Israel,
Yehuda Shaul couldn’t wait for the day he was drafted to do
military service and defend his homeland. But the bubble burst for him
on his first day in the Occupied Palestinian Territories when he was
ordered to fire a grenade machine gun into a Palestinian neighbourhood.
He was shocked as he knew that it was impossible not to hit innocent
civilians while aiming at Palestinian gunmen with such a weapon.
After he left the army,
Yehuda set up Breaking the Silence with his former comrades in arms.
The group has collected hundreds of stories and photos from former and
serving soldiers in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
