A university-educated anthropologist, Violeta didn’t think she was at risk of catching HIV. Discovering that there was no support network for people with HIV in Bolivia, she set up a group focusing on access to treatment. Information is also a priority, says Violeta, as ignorance is killing Bolivians.

HIV/AIDS in Bolivia

Estimates of adults with HIV in Bolivia – South America’s poorest country – range between five and ten thousand
Fundamental to the struggle against HIV/AIDS is access to antiretroviral (ARVs) drugs, which can stop the onset of illness for many years
In 2002 the Bolivian Government was ordered by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to provide ARVs to 52 people living with HIV/AIDS. By the time the government got around to delivering the drugs – more than a year later – nearly half of the 52 had died
Currently only a donation from the Brazilian government ensures that ARVs are available to HIV positive Bolivians
