Mozambique’s recent history

  • Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world – a result of colonisation, decades of civil war and violence, along with the prevalence of drought and floods in the region
  • After a ten-year guerrilla war, Mozambique won its independence from Portugal in 1975. The country then went through a devastating civil war with more than one million people killed or maimed and five million people displaced
  • Fighting ended in 1992 but an estimated seven million guns lie hidden in Mozambique
  • In a unique programme, more than 70,000 families have exchanged their guns for useful tools like bicycles, hoes, or sewing machines
