Circle of trust and reconciliation
Robi helps preach peace, not pain, in a region scarred by conflict

Robi Damelin
Age: 62
Home: Tel Aviv, Israel
When her son was shot by a sniper in March, 2002, Robi Damelin felt like a hole had been punched in her heart. But she turned grief and anger into a dialogue of trust and reconciliation with other Israeli and Palestinian families who have lost a loved one.

Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories

  • Robi's organisation, The Parents Circle, was founded in 1994 by Yizhak Frankenthal, whose 19-year-old son, Arik, was killed by Palestinian militants: it aims to bring together the bereaved from all sides of the conflict, to promote peace and reconciliation
  • Their grassroots group, Families Forum, comprises 500 families dedicated to communicating a message of hope around Israeli and Palestinian areas of the region. They carried out more than 1,000 classroom visits to schools in 2004
  • Hello Shalom/Hello Salaam is a radical and unique scheme launched by The Parents Circle. It's a phone line that connects Palestinian and Israeli callers, by dialling a four digit number. Over 400,000 calls have been made since it was launched in 2002
