Since her mother died, nine-year-old Punam in Nepal has shouldered the responsibility for caring for her two younger siblings. She cooks for them, helps them dress and makes sure they get to school on time. Her father works an 18-hour day to feed his family. Despite her hard life, Punam is grateful that she can at least go to school - unlike some of her friends.

Child labour in Nepal

  • An estimated 1.6 million children work in Nepal
  • As a result many of these children cannot attend school - an estimated 14% of boys and 26% of girls do not receive an education
  • Many of these children work in the worst sort of conditions, such as rock breaking
  • The civil war in Nepal has contributed to child migration, with many parents preferring to send their children to work in towns to avoid being caught up in the conflict
