Karrus' dream comes to life
Karrus wants a better future for young Liberian refugees

Karrus Hayes
Age: 31
Home: Accra, Ghana
Karrus left Liberia in 1996 when the civil war intensified. He fled by boat and ended up at the Buduburam refugee camp in Ghana. Today, more than 45,000 refugees live there permanently. Through sheer dedication, he has managed to raise enough funds to set up a free school for over 500 Liberian children living in the camp. He strongly supports free education and feels it is the only means to empower the younger generation.

Liberia's civil war legacy

  • Around 250,000 people were killed in the 14-year civil war
  • 1.3 million Liberians are believed to have been uprooted during the battles between government forces and the rebels
  • Liberian refugees from camps across West Africa are now returning home. In some parts of the country this fuels ethnic tension over ownership of land and homes
  • In 2006, Ellen Johnson-Shirleaf became Liberia's new head of state. She is the first woman to become president of an African country
