Karrus Hayes
Age: 31
Home: Accra, Ghana
Karrus left Liberia in 1996 when the
civil war
intensified. He fled by boat and ended up at the Buduburam refugee camp
in Ghana. Today, more
than 45,000 refugees
live there permanently. Through sheer dedication, he has managed to
raise enough funds to set up a free school for over 500 Liberian
children living in the camp. He strongly supports free education and
feels it is the only means to empower the younger generation.
