Frie Aregaw
Age: 22
Home: Ethiopia
Frie thinks she’s lucky
– she’s the eldest of ten children in a family that
lives on £15 a month. She used to think her family had a
tough life, until she learned that there were people living with HIV
and dying of AIDS in Ethiopia. She decided she had to do something to
help and so trained as a counsellor with local group, the Organisation
for Social Services on AIDS.
Her mother wasn’t happy. “At first I was angry with
Frie and I said, ‘why did you join this group? It’s
no good. You’ll get infected yourself,’”
she explains. “But I only thought that because I was
ignorant. Later, when she explained it all to me, I was proud and
happy. She’s educated me.”
