Tango dreams
Tango offers Carlos an escape from his worries

Carlos Piñeiro
Age: 71
Home: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Argentine pensioner Carlos Piñeiro tells us how he and his wife survive on a meagre pension of $1.67 a day each.

He dreams of eating fish in a restaurant but has to content himself with budget food from the local shop. He loves singing tango, writing poetry, good conversation and philosophising about life. Sitting on his balcony overlooking a busy Buenos Aires motorway, he wonders why everyone is in such a hurry.

Argentina's economy

  • Argentina has one of the largest economies in South America but in 2001 the economy collapsed causing a devastating recession
  • The country defaulted on its IMF loans and devalued its currency
  • High inflation and unemployment pushed many people over the poverty line and lead to social unrest
  • The economy appears to have turned a corner and is growing again but unemployment remains at 11% and nearly 40% of the population remains in poverty
  • Tango was born in the lower-class cafes and bars of 19th Century Buenos Aires. It became popular in Europe in the 1920s and recently it has enjoyed a global revival
