In 1970 Seroume’s village chief Abdoulaye Diack realised that cutting down trees was aggravating desertification in this area of northern Senegal. So he planted ten mango seeds. Today only one tree survives but it is magnificent. It provides shelter, firewood, food and much-needed vegetation for the whole village.
