peace & conflict Peace & conflict

Wars are waged for many reasons – race, religion, politics. But whatever the reason the results are the same – death and devastation.  Wars linked to oil, timber, gemstones and drug crops have destroyed entire communities all over the world. And those who pay the highest price are the poor and most vulnerable: women and children.

Peace & conflict facts

  • Every year 500,000 people are killed by armed violence – that’s one person every minute
  • There are an estimated 250,000 child soldiers fighting wars throughout the world
  • In 2004 eight million people fled their homes and sought refuge in other countries, a further 25 million were displaced within their own countries
  • In 2006 an estimated £561 billion was spent worldwide on arms – about 15 times the amount spent globally on aid
