hiv/aids HIV/AIDS

Each day 8,000 people die from HIV/AIDS. Most are from sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV-related illness is the leading cause of adult death. In some African countries life expectancy has plummeted to below 40 years, devastating a whole generation. The depletion of the workforce means economic disaster, food shortages and millions of children orphaned.

HIV/AIDS facts

  • Worldwide 40 million people are HIV-positive – 70% are in Africa
  • HIV infection is caused by sharing bodily fluids, including blood, semen and vaginal secretions
  • There is no cure for HIV/AIDS but it can be prevented by safe blood transfusions, using condoms and sterilising needles and syringes for injecting
  • Treating HIV with anti-retroviral drugs prolongs life, but Africans have limited access to these drugs.
Only 1% of Africans living with HIV/AIDS receive ARVs
